Restoring to Another Tenant or Site
Preparation Steps
- Ensure that there is someone who has read/write access to the restore target destination, preferably with a Microsoft Global Administrator or SharePoint Administrator role.
- Add the restore account directly to the user's Site Collection Admin on the target.
Performing a Cross-Tenant Restore
- When restoring backed up data, check the "restore to another tenant" box (see the image below).
- Provide the email address of the Administrator and the password.
- Provide the site to restore to.
Performing a Cross-Site Restore
- When restoring backed up data, check the "restore to another tenant" box (see the image below).
- Provide the email address of the Administrator.
- Provide the site to restore to.
NOTE: When performing a cross-site restore, there is no need to enter the password, because there is an authentication token in place (we use it for daily backups and restores) and we already have access to the restore destination tenant.
TIP: In the Restore To field, don't include the "https://" in the URL. For example, if the site is https://mycompany.com/sharepoint.com/personal/john_doe_company_com, just use "mycompany.com/sharepoint.com/personal/john_doe_company_com"
NOTES:
- When you restore to a different tenant, you can’t use Single-Sign On (SSO) or multi-factor authentication (MFA) credentials. Instead, use basic authentication or the application password if MFA is enabled.
- If the endpoint and source are in different domains, permissions, site groups and users will not be restored.
